It is like the case of where the Easter Rabbit get the eggs. Nobody asks about the eggs because they are thinking about symbols of Spring/Fertility not a literal rabbit. If someone wanted to be an Easter Rabbit fundamentalist they would need to explain about the eggs. The same way fundamentalist Christians explain about Cain's wife.

So your argument for it being intended as a myth is that it has holes in the plot? If it was meant to be a myth why not make it internally consistent too! They probably made up stories to explain creation and existence and really believed them. Are you really saying lots of the OT was originally intended as metaphor? I can understand why someone would want to say this if they believed the OT was metaphorical but is this idea backed up?

From a literal standpoint if you make up a story you know it isn't true. This would have been true in the past as well as the present. A more serious answer might point out the holes in the story (where Cain got his wife for example). If this is supposed to be history why not fill in the holes? You are right not every myth (or what is regarded as a myth today) was likely intended at the time to be metaphorical.

I doubt that very much. I suppose every ancient myth was also considered to be metaphorical at the time? What evidence is there that the people who came up with these myths thought they were non literal? I am sure it is very popular for people who think Bible stories are metaphorical to think the original writers of these myths intended them to be taken that way, however this doesn't really make much sense does it...?

Another great story!! It reminds me of my own journey, trying to sort out evolution and creation and feeling like the creationists were downright deceptive. It lead to me creating my blog.

The sad thing about the creation story is that the people who made it up knew that it was a metaphor not a literal account. It is only later people who tried to make it into history/science.

I know it would have caused complications, but I think he really should have sent that email. If anything, it would have at least gotten her thinking and the end SHOULD have kept him in a safe zone.
